Many people come to The Make up Dept. over a period of years and some go in deep! Two such gals are Julie and Corinne.
Julie Thompson booked onto the Foundation course in January 2017 and she was hooked! A speedy booking followed to get on the SFX course the following week and due to a last minute cancellation she grabbed her chance to do Get Set Ready straight away! Her three-week intensive deep dive paid off and Julie started working on The Frankenstein Chronicles series 2 as a daily in crowd make up trainee. Julie also worked on several short films and has been doing bridal and occasion make up before starting on Game of Thrones season 8 in crowd make up for the 9 months filming schedule.
Julie has continued her training at The Make up Dept. taking the Introduction to Prosthetics course in Sept 2017 and the 5-day intensive Wig course in October 2017, and Period Make up in 2018. After 13 years working in retail – leaving her position as a supervisor in Tesco – Julie’s career has gone from strength to strength.
“Completing the courses at The Make up Dept. is learning from the best in the business in an environment where you can truly flourish and develop. It’s not just the skills that you leave with but also the confidence and to know you can only get better!” Julie Thompson.
Corinne Clery also made a bold move from one make up career to another. After studying Make up for Film, TV & Theatre, Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology: 2005-2007, Corinne went on to work for M.A.C. as a retail artist. The Carlow native progressed to the senior position of trainer – running numerous training programmes, seminars and master classes as well as working backstage at London Fashion Week. After ten years with M.A.C. in Dublin, Corinne felt the call of the film set and was recommended The Makeup Dept. as the place to do a deep dive and refresh her skills.
The Special Effects course and Get Set Ready were booked as a two week block in late 2017. Corinne started working on Game of Thrones season 8 in October. Due to her previous experience the talented make up artist had the opportunity to work on a major event as well as a photoshoot with Game of Thrones main cast.
“I remember being so excited at the prospect of attending The Make up Dept. because I knew I was going to be taught by the best! Having done SFX over 10 years ago in college I felt I really needed to learn the latest techniques. I was shocked by the amount we covered in just five days and I know had I not done that could I would have felt out of my depth on set. The Get Set Ready course was just what I needed to make the transition from fashion to film make up. In a million years I never would have dreamt of the opportunities it would bring my way and I will always be so grateful for that.”
