The Make up Dept. was set up by Emmy award winning hair and make up artist Pamela Smyth to fill the demand for highly-trained hair and make up professionals who have the necessary skills to work on the high profile TV and Film productions happening throughout Ireland.

Pamela’s approach to training is a holistic one as you must be excellent at every aspect of make up, as you never know who is going to sit in your chair, so knowledge and preparation is everything. The Make up Dept. is the only school that covers the full range of make up courses for the beginner, to professional TV & Film courses offering all the skills needed to be a professional make up artist working in the industry today.

Even as a trainee, there is simply no room for error and ‘picking it up as you go’ when working on a HBO production or for a renowned Director like Ridley Scott. You must know all the basics to begin working in this vibrant and exciting industry so your training must be considered as the highest priority.

From creating a look for a bride on her wedding day, to a strong look for a fashion show or photoshoot to the vast range of skills required to work on film, students of The Make up Dept. range from beginners to experienced hair and makeup artists wanting to keep their skills up to date.

Pamela has over 30 years experience as a make up designer and Head of Department in film and TV, having progressed from fashion shoots and ad campaigns. Our make up course tutors have all worked with Pamela on set and she has hand picked them for their individual make up skills and extensive experience.

All of our courses at The Make up Dept. have been specially designed by our pro team to insure that our combined knowledge is passed on to our students in easily managed modules. While other schools hire in award winning makeup artists only The Make up Dept is run by Emmy award winning make up artists working at the highest level in the industry so our courses and masterclasses cover the skills you need to get hired in this competitive industry.

We hope now for the first time anyone interested in becoming a full make up artist, with all aspects of this exciting career, no longer have to travel out of Northern Ireland to get trained by the best in the Industry.

Our aim is to distil this hands-on experience into our intensive classes to nurture your creativity and expand your make up skills.

Our commitment is to produce industry ready make up artists that are simply brilliant!
